Shortlisted Proposal for the Kildare entry for HorseMania at the World Equestrian Games 2010, Lexington, Kentucky.
My proposal was to define the structure and muscles tone of the life size fibre glass horse using text and words collected from people associated with horse racing and breeding in Co. Kildare –‘the Thoroughbred County’, thereby bringing a sense of community and sense of Kildare directly to Lexington, Kentucky.
The body of the horse would be gilded silver, with defining lines and sponged washes to soften contours, and finished with a clear protective varnish.
At a distance the animal would catch the viewers eye as being a ‘steel grey’, alert, powerful vibrant and alive.
Close up it becomes clear the defining lines are text, revealing personal ‘wow’ moments gathered from managers, owners, trainers, etc, together with names of outstanding places, horses, and people, bringing the Kildare community and sense of place to Lexington.
