Cheltenham Gold Cup today

Cheltenham Gold Cup today.
In March 2006 I was invited to paint a painting for presentation to the jockey Conor O' Dwyer, owner Michael O' Leary, trainer Mouse Morris and to the sponsor of War of Attrition, Newbridge Silverware, the winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup 2006.
It was a wonderful commission, and a challenge from William Doyle, M.D. of Newbridge Silverware!

The first thing that came to mind were the crowds cheering on the winning pair.  The painting was a presentation, so I included the distinctive shape of the Cheltenham Gold Cup trophy inscribing the names of the winning team on 23 carat gold leaf

The jockey has a distinctive style of riding...Getting the colours of the right silks was a must, and I wanted to show the sponsor's name.

Winning posts are not a standard size or shape. The suppliers of the winning post to Cheltenham supplied the information I needed...
The painting represents the final moments of the race, still being run, horse and jockey still working hard, crowds cheering from the stands... Its an uphill run, the final jump was wonderful, the winning post is theirs for the taking!
At the presentation evening, hosted by the sponsor, Newbridge Silverware, the race was watched again... and it was just as exciting this time around.
